“we’ll always be postpartum”

Clients often ask how long the postpartum period should last, to which I always respond, after childbirth “we will always be postpartum”.

I say this because conceiving, growing and delivering a baby requires a total rewiring of the maternal body and brain, a full-body takeover that forever augments a mother’s physiology. Now, do I mean this to say you’ll never fully recover from pregnancy and childbirth? Absolutely not. I say it to empower women to help reshape how we think about postpartum recovery. Growing and delivering a baby is our superpower, so why rush to let go of all that magic?

When planning for postpartum recovery with my clients, we work in phases as opposed to timelines, so as to dismantle the idea that the postpartum period is one size fits all. The core tenets of our work together are rest, recovery and replenishment, and if it takes us closer to one year, well, so too did it take you to grow, deliver and bond with your newborn.
